The Introduction to Cybersecurity course provides learners with a foundational understanding of how modern systems, networks, and software are protected from threats. This course introduces core security principles and explores practical protection methods across multiple layers, including operating systems, networks, and security software. Designed for beginners, the program builds awareness of common risks and defensive strategies used to secure wired and wireless environments in today’s digital world.
Module 1: Security Layers
Introduces the foundational principles of cybersecurity. Learners explore defense‑in‑depth, confidentiality, integrity, availability (CIA), and how layered security protects systems, networks, and data from threats.
Module 2: Operating System Security
Focuses on securing operating systems. Learners examine user accounts, permissions, patching, system hardening, and common OS‑level threats affecting both workstation and server environments.
Module 3: Network Security
Explores wired and wireless network security concepts. Learners study network threats, basic protective technologies, secure connectivity practices, and how traffic is monitored and controlled to reduce risk.
Module 4: Security Software
Covers commonly used security tools. Learners explore antivirus software, firewalls, endpoint protection, and other security applications designed to detect, prevent, and respond to threats.
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
Explain fundamental cybersecurity principles and layered defense concepts
Identify common security risks and threats affecting systems and networks
Apply basic operating system security practices to protect computing resources
Understand wired and wireless network security concepts and protections
Recognize the role of security software in preventing, detecting, and responding to threats
Describe how multiple security layers work together to reduce organizational risk
Certificate of completion
This class is an independent-study course. Students will have all the resources needed to successfully complete the course within the online material. A student helpdesk is available for technical support during the course enrollment.
